The additional cost of an efficient Chinese Assistant for afternoons only would be $500 per annum, which expense would only be justified by the presence of at least 20 Chinese boys, paying a total of about $600 per annum (allowing an average of the two rates $36 and $24 per annum).
Chinese boys, less than 20 in number, should obtain assistance for themselves in these subjects at their own expense.
The total expense of Kowloon School, as per Estimates 1899, is $5,888; if from this be subtracted $1,200 House Rent, the Estimates would appear $2,688.
If a deduction be made of $1,500 per annum (allowing 25 children at $56 and 25 at $24 per annum) the net cost to the Government would be $1,188.
If $500 be added for Chinese Assistant the net cost would be raised to $1,488.
